Baiba Tilhena studies saxophone performance with professor Artis Sīmanis at Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (JVLMA). She began playing saxophone relatively late in her life – at the age of fifteen, attending lessons of Andrejs Cepītis at Madona Music School. Since her second year of studies, she regularly and successfully participates in competitions (3rd prize at the XIII Latvian Music Schools Wind and Percussion Instruments Competition in 2008, 2nd prize at the XIV Latvian Music Schools Wind and Percussion Instruments Competition in 2009). She has improved her professional skills in masterclasses with such exceptional saxophone players as Lars Mlekush, Enzo Filippetti, Crister Johnsson and others.
In parallel with her education, she has steadily honed her professional skills through participation in various chamber ensembles and orchestras, pursuing musical activities in classical as well as non-academic styles. Currently alongside her membership in the Riga Saxophone Quartet she also plays baritone saxophone in the wind quintet The Sparkling 5, in JVLMA Saxophone Class Orchestra as well as in Madona Wind Instrument Orchestra.
Baiba’s current professional niche is journalism. In 2012 she obtained a bachelor’s degree in social sciences from Rīga Stradiņš University, majoring in communication science, academically researching the field of culture media in Latvia and analysing its core elements.
